Get Walking With The BMC and YHA Festival Of Walking

We have partnered with YHA (England and Wales) to support the Festival of Walking as it returns this autumn. With six weeks of events and offers from 3 September-19 October, the festival is aimed at encouraging as many people as possible to discover the health and wellbeing benefits of walking - and it's free to get involved!

Social Routes

Come along and join us for a social walk led by BMC volunteer walking guides! If you’re building your confidence and would like to walk with a group, or you want to meet like-minded people to walk with, these are the routes for you. Starting at selected YHA locations across England and Wales, a BMC volunteer guide will lead the way, and if you have any questions they’ll be happy to pass on hill walking hints and tips.

Where:

Peak District | 24 September | YHA Hartington Hall

Peak District | 8 October | YHA Hartington Hall

Northumberland | 7 October | YHA The Sill at Hadrian’s Wall

Lake District | 14 October | YHA Ambleside.

Yorkshire | 15 October | YHA Boggle Hole

These are just a few of the routes on offer, find them all at the Festival of Walking website.

Self Guided Routes

If you’d like to go at your own pace while discovering a new area, you can plan your ideal day out with the Festival of Walking self guided walks. YHA has produced more than 180 free-to-download circular walking routes to inspire new and seasoned walkers. Starting from YHA hostels across England and Wales, the routes include a range of difficulty, from shorter or flatter, to steeper and more challenging days out, as well as accessible routes.

New To The Hills?

If you’re relatively or completely new to hill walking, the YHA Festival of Walking is the perfect opportunity to give it a go, and the BMC has got your back! We’ve got loads of tips and advice on our online hub for people who want to get out there but don’t know where to start.

We also produced a free booklet in partnership with YHA for the first Festival of Walking in 2022. With advice on a whole range of subjects, Into The Hills highlights essential skills you should learn and develop as well as tips on what to pack, what to wear, and how to plan your route so you can get out with confidence and enjoy walks in the hills and mountains.

Hills 2 Oceans Litter Picking Hubs

Why not combine a social or self-guided walk, with a clean up along the way? Help remove as much litter and plastic as possible from our hills, mountains and crags so it doesn’t end up in our oceans, and YHA will even responsibly dispose of the litter for you!

We have partnered with YHA to provide BMC Hills 2 Oceans litter picking hubs at the following YHA hostels:  Ambleside, Berwick, Borrowdale, Castleton, Coalport, Coniston, Conwy, Dartmoor, Dufton, Hartington, Hathersage, Haworth, Keswick, London Central, National Forest, New Forest, Okehampton, Port Eynon, Sheringham, Snowdon Llanberis, South Downs, St Briavels, Wasdale, Whitby, York.
