The hugely popular BMC/British Mountain Medicine Society Mountain Medicine Weekend is taking place on 18-19 May 2024 in Hathersage, Peak District.

Saturday 18 - Sunday 19 May in Hathersage, Peak District.

Promoting best practice to all mountain users

This event provides mountain first aid teaching from the British Mountain Medicine Society to those who love the outdoors. It is open to novices and anyone who wishes to refresh their knowledge. You might be an volunteer walk leader or a mountain/climbing instructor or guide requiring CPD (Continuing Professional Development), or a regular outdoors person keen to up their skills. All are welcome.

On Saturday evening we'll be joined by BMC Patron Mick Fowler who will regale us with the tale of the trip that Simon Yates and Mick did last year to attempt the N/NE face of Patkhor (6083m) in Tajikistan. There were various setbacks culminating in an abseil anchor failing, Simon falling 100m and various injuries being incurred.

Ticket prices

BMC and BMMS members receive a discounted entry. You can sign up for either or both days of workshops from qualified medical doctors. All tickets include a Pie & Pea dinner on the Saturday night (bring your own drinks), with evening entertainment TBC.

Accommodation is not included, however there is a YHA in Hathersage and North Lees Campsites nearby.

Event registration will close Mon 6 May 2024 or earlier if the course is sold out. We anticipate that once again this event will be highly popular so book now to avoid disappointment.

SATURDAY PROGRAMME

The weekend will start with a Primary Survey session which all attendees will take. You will then have free choice of 4 of the following sessions:

• Altitude and acclimatisation

• AMS/HAPE/HACE and PAC bags

• Frostbite

• Hypothermia

• Avalanche medicine

• Hand injuries in climbers

• Children and mountains

• Women in the mountains

• Multiple injured casualty

• Disabilities in the mountains

• Mountaineering with co-existing conditions (General)

• Mountaineering with co-existing conditions (Diabetes)

Patkhor - Coping when it all goes wrong.

SUNDAY PROGRAMME

On Sunday you will have free choice of any 5 of the following sessions:

• First aid kits

• Soft tissue wounds

• Limb splintage

• Ticks & Lyme disease

• Hyperthermia and dehydration

• Water purification

• Personal mental health first aid

• Expedition dentistry

• Dealing with death in the mountains

• CPR in the mountains

• Improvised carries

• Meet the team: Mountain Rescue

• Dogs in the mountains

CPD points are available for members of MTA, AMI, BAIML, BMG

Terms & Conditions

Bookings will close on Monday 6 May 2024, or earlier if we reach capacity.

Places on BMC workshops are not guaranteed until payment has been received. Places are also limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment.

A certificate of attendance will be offered to all attendees, but no formal qualification will be given.

Cancellations within 14 days of the course starting will not be eligible for a refund.

Cancellations 15-28 days prior to the course starting will get a 50% refund.

Cancellations more than 28 days prior to the course starting get a full refund.

If the course is cancelled by the BMC & BMMS a full refund will be offered.
